Duty forecaster for NSW Bureau of Meteorology, Steph Spackman, said Wagga residents should make the most of the late start to the freezing temperatures.
"The weather is behind schedule actually, we usually start to see cold fronts through April, so it is a little later this year and definitely not unusual to get these cooler temperatures in May along with some snowfall in these areas," she said.
According to Ms Spackman, a second cold front is on the way, bringing maximum temperatures of just 13-14 degrees.
"A second front will be passing across NSW, mainly entering the State late Thursday into Friday, and with that we do have a large upper cold pool of air which is what brings down the temperatures," she said.
"It's really quick moving so expected to clear out of NSW by Saturday, but then we're seeing another high pressure system established over central parts of South Australia which will strengthen over the next few days to move across NSW slowly on Sunday with a bit of rain."
With wild weather looming around the region, and an extreme dust storm rolling through Mildura, Ms Spackman said Wagga can breathe easy knowing a dust storm here is unlikely.
"Strong winds with last system came through which is what brought the dust, but with the next system, we aren't expecting really strong winds so it's unlikely to see any dust," she said.
"When we do see those stronger winds coming a little later it will be accompanied with more moisture to settle anything on the surface."
The extra moisture in the air has also sparked the beginning of the snow season with the first dusting covering the grounds of places like Falls Creek and Thredbo.
Mountain Watch Editor Reggae Elliss said the snow arrived just on time.
"We often get snowfall in April and May, and at the moment it's just a dusting overnight, but looking like we might have some more significant snowfall over the next few days," he said.
"The good, strong, low pressure systems brings great snow so it's looking like it will be a great season."
Mr Elliss said more than 40cm of snow is expected to fall around areas like Hotham and Falls Creek over the next few days.
"There's a lot of cold air coming straight up from the south, and at the moment Thredbo has snow down to about the top third of the mountain which is expected to almost double soon," he said.
While snow may not quite reach Wagga, it will be a cold winter ahead.
