Brothers continued their unbeaten start to the season but Kelly was pleased with how the side approached the clash.
With a game against Temora on Sunday, who are also undefeated after a 38-4 win over Young, Kelly expects he will really know where his team is at.
"The benchmark of the comp is Brothers and Temora we've got this weekend so we will see how we are tracking after these two games," Kelly said.
"If we are belted by a fair bit then we will know we need so more work but if we are tracking close to them we might put ourselves in a pretty good position in the later part of the year."
Things could have been better if they didn't accidentally give Brothers a numerical advantage.
For the first five minutes Kangaroos had an extra player on the bench and their rivals made them pay with an early try before the mistake was realised.
Kangaroos sit in fourth on the ladder with two wins and two losses so far.
They are level with Albury, who scored a 82-0 win over Junee, and Cootamundra, who edged Gundagai 8-6, on four points.
Southcity are a win further ahead but two points behind Brothers and Temora.
