After winning the Ted Ryder Cup (1600m) on Christmas Eve, the Ron Stubbs-trained seven-year-old proved too strong in the Tom Patton Cup (1800m).
It was Spunlago's first attempt at the distance, but he continues to step up.
Stubbs couldn't be happier with his consistent efforts.
"I'm more than happy with him carrying the weight he carries," Stubbs said.
"He's just so honest and it is good to win two cups here."
Stubbs is now looking at runs in the Canberra and Albury cups after a fourth in the Wodonga Cup three starts back.
The $200,000 Canberra Cup is on next Sunday, March 10, with Stubbs' hometown feature on March 22.
He is confident it is within reach.
"Immediate plans are to nominate for the Canberra Cup and the Albury Cup," Stubbs said.
"This was a progressive step and obviously we will monitor how he goes with each race but on today's performance we will certainly take the next step."
Spunlago carried 61 kilograms after Richards' two-kilogram claim.
However Stubbs expects he will appreciate the drop in weight stepping up in class.
Zarlu ($9.50) proved too good for Spunlago ($3.40 fav) last time out, but despite an impressive finishing burst the Peter Morgan-trained galloper couldn't reel in the top weight.
Instead the son of Hard Spun held tough to take a half-length victory.
Leader Run Hoff Run battled on well to finish third and extend his lead in the Wagga Stayers Series.
With double points up for grabs, Run Hoff Run moved to 110 points to be 68 ahead at the midway point.
