Wagga trainer Gary Colvin continued his strong form on his home track as Delta Rose ($9.50) proved too good in the Jupiter Motors Maiden Handicap (1000m).
With 12 starts to her name for only one placing, Colvin did not enter Tuesday’s race meeting with high hopes for Delta Rose. He hoped to see her hit the line, with races over further in mind down the track.
But aided by a perfect ride from Jake Duffy, Delta Rose pounced on the lead at the 100m mark and held her rivals at bay.
“It was a pretty weak maiden but she has matured,” Colvin explained.
“She hasn’t grown much but she’s thickened up and it was a good win.”
Delta Rose’s previous best performance, a second at Albury, came first-up last preparation.
The first-up win on Tuesday may have provided Colvin with the key.
“She got up over a mile last time but she ran a couple of nice races fresh so that might be more her go,” he said.
“Hopefully she can win a couple more races.”
Delta Rose held off the fast-finishing Welletsdoit ($3.00), who was taken close to the outside fence in the straight, by a half length. Nicotic ($3.50) was a further length back in third place.
Colvin had Superoo ($7.50) and Tully Toff ($4.40) run fourth and sixth respectively in the Wagga Scamper (1000m), while Supalux ($4.80) worked home well for fifth in the Maiden Plate (1200m).
