Five probationary constables will be based in Wagga while one will be in Junee.

The officers were part of the latest class to have graduated from the Police Academy in Goulburn on December 7.

They will undergo an induction and partnered with senior constables during the initial stages.

At a media conference today, constable Simone Carney, who moved from the Hills District to Wagga, said she was “lucky to end up in Wagga”.

“To be part of the community here is one of the biggest things,” Ms Carney said.

“I come from a farming background so I’ve always loved how warm and welcoming people are and just to be a part of it.”

Asked about which area of policing she would like to pursue long term, Ms Carney said she was not sure yet.

“There’s so much out there, so I think just see what else is there and see where I lead into,” she said.

Having been one of 257 new probationary constables across the state, Ms Carney said she gained a lot from the police academy.

“You learn so much about yourself and all the other things that come with the policing part of it,” she said.

“A lot of take on and to learn, but they’re all really supportive, which is great.”

Riverina Police District’s Superintendent Bob Noble welcomed the latest officers, saying the district was excited to have them.

“It’s an amazing time in a young person’s life and we’re wishing them well,” Superintendent Noble said.

“It’s very good timing, it’s going to be very busy over the next few weeks.

“I think as a new probationary constable, you’d want to get right into the action and they’re certainly going to see plenty of that.”

Superintendent Noble said the constables were of various backgrounds that would benefit the district.

“I think the injection of new blood and new ideas is really important,” he said.

“We’re a diverse workforce and it’s important that we embrace and value that as it does bring so much.”

As for whether that is enough officers for the district, Superintendent Noble said “we’re at full capacity now”.

“We’ve got more police now than we’ve ever had in the Riverina district,” he said.

“We certainly welcome them and they’ll be put to good use.”
