The Coolamon product was one the biggest shocks of the draft when he was overlooked for a sixth consecutive year.
The 23-year-old had just enjoyed his best season, winning a second JJ Liston Trophy, that prompted a handful of AFL clubs to meet with him.
The decision of AFL clubs to again overlook Gibbons angered many but he is not going to let another draft disappointment keep him down.
“Thanks to everyone for all the kind words (over the) last 24 hours,” Gibbons tweeted over the weekend.
“Disappointing again for myself but won’t be the end.”
Three of Gibbons’ Williamstown teammates were picked up by AFL clubs, making his omission even more perplexing.
But Gibbons chose to instead celebrate the success of his teammates.
“So happy for the other three lads from Williamstown, Cav, Shoot and Bing. Well deserved, be good to see them all make an impact next year,” he wrote.
Williamstown coach Andy Collins told AFL.com.au that he was devastated for Gibbons.
"I'm devastated for him," Collins told AFL.com.au.
"Most other VFL players that were drafted would say that Michael is the standard to adhere to.
"It's really sad for him and it's going to really test his resilience.”
