The Sturt Public School student earned a start at nationals after winning gold in the 10 years boys 200m at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships in Sydney.
“I enjoyed it a lot because my nan and pop came,” Harper, 10, said.
“I thought I could get a position but I didn’t think gold.”
State titles are rare achievements at the competitive PSSA carnivals and Harper and his proud family paid particular thanks to sprint coach Owen Hogan.
One of the fastest in the heats (27.94 seconds), the year five student ran second in his semi-final (27.77s) to be the third quickest into the final.
However, Harper ran the bend better than anyone when it mattered, winning the final by 0.21s, in 27.81.
“It was all pretty even until the last 50 metres then I just put an extra step on them,” Harper said.
He will represent his school and state in the 200m at the Australian championships in Melbourne later this month.
Harper also competed in the 10 years boys long jump, 100m and relay at the NSW state championships.
