Blake Harper, returning after a break last season, made an unbeaten 61 as South Wagga enjoyed a 25-run win over Colts in the Twenty20 encounter.
South Wagga batted first and finished at 5-145 before restricting Colts to 8-120 off their 20 overs.
New recruit Warren Clunes claimed 4-14 off four overs with the ball after being unluckily run out for 21 with the bat.
Stand-in South Wagga captain Luke Gerhard was happy with a solid win to start the season.
“It was good. Pretty happy to get the first win. A win at the start of the year is just as important as a win at the end of the year,” Gerhard said.
Gerhard said Harper’s form with the bat was one of the big positives for South Wagga from the opening round.
“It was good to see Blake Harper score some runs in his first game back,” he said.
“He batted really well, he was very patient. At the start he played straight and as the game went on, he got going and hit some big sixes, which was good to see.”
Alex Jones snared the vital wicket of David Bolton before a run was scored in Kooringal’s chase to put Colts immediately on the back foot.
Colts captain Keenan Hanigan (35) and Mat Etchells (34) enjoyed a solid partnership before Harper ended that.
He finished with 2-27 with the ball.
