Eleanor Dunlop died when she was just 52, after fighting cancer for 15 years, and Darcie has just shaved her hair after raising more than $2200 and fulfilling a long-held goal to honour her grandma.
Darcie’s family and friends gathered outside the Wagga Cancer Council office to watch as Darcie’s long red curls were shaved away.
Mum Elizabeth Dunlop said her late mother had fought cancer with an inner strength and resilience, characteristics she saw in Darcie, who had been asking to undertake a fund-raising head shave for some time.
“I couldn’t be more proud,” she said.
“Darcie is carrying on her grandma’s legacy in a way.”
Ms Dunlop, who was raised in Northern Ireland, remembers walking around her village to hand out little cards to promote coffee mornings being held by her mother to raise money for UK cancer charities.
“I chose October because it is breast cancer month and the month of my grandmother’s birthday,” Darcie said.
