Emergency services responded to the scene at Kaloona Drive at about 4am after reports from a witness.
Riverina Police District’s Detective Inspector Darren Cloake said the fire was deliberate.
He said the two vehicles – blue and black Holden Commodores – were “targets of an arson attack”.
“We believe both vehicles were parked nearby [each other],” Inspector Cloake said.
“A witness notice that both vehicles were on fire and contacted emergency services, who attended and ensured everyone was safe.
”Any fires got the potential to extend further and damage other properties.”
Asked about the issue in Wagga, Inspector Cloake said “we generally see most of those fires in the Ashmont area”.
“It’s been well documented in recent cases,” he said.
“It’s been generally younger offenders responsible for that – in stealing the cars, joy riding then destroying the vehicles at a later date.”
He said the latest incident in Bourkelands was “certainly unusual”.
“The exact motivations for these offences are unknown at this stage and enquiries are ongoing,” he said.
