Bettermatch is out to win it three wins in a row when he lines up a Menangle Country Series heat at Wagga on Tuesday night.
In a quirk of the conditions, the five-year-old is eligible for the C2-C3 despite winning a final at Menangle last month.
After an impressive win at Menangle on July 7, trainer Col Thomas is looking to make the most of another shot.
“We’re lucky to get in it as you can only win one in 12 months,” Thomas said.
Bettermatch had to sustain plenty of early pressure to win his final in a mile rate of 1:51.3.
The first half was run in 54.3 second, but he still held on for the win.
Thomas thought the hot tempo actually suited him.
“That doesn’t worry him and I think it done him good as he is very lazy in front and is probably better with something attacking him,” he said.
“He just goes to sleep in front.”
However Thomas is wary of Geldof after his strong win in the NSW Breeders Challenge Regional Final last month.
Geldof has drawn seven and looms as the obvious threat to the former star juvenile on the comeback trail.
“It’s a pretty nice horse,” Thomas said.
“We’re lucky he’s a C3 and we’re a C2 so he’s drawn bad and we will probably lead.
“I thought Geldof went really good at Bathurst and beat a nice horse so he’s the one to beat.”
It is a bumper 10-race card with two Evolution Series heats for the three-year-olds to conclude the card after being transferred from Saturday’s abandoned meeting
