The students pushed hard to secure a two-goal lead at half time but were held scoreless in the second term as the Wanderers laid siege to UNSW’s goal.
Fry was disappointed not to capitalise on scoring opportunities but expressed pride in his side’s performance.
“We were on top during that second half and it’s the most chances we’ve created all season,” Fry said.
“The past month or so, we’ve been putting in really good performances on the paddock … and it’s quite an exciting time for the club.”
Nathan Preston was a standout for the home side in the unfamiliar position of centre-back while Caylum Barber drew praise for another positive display up front.
“Nathan was phenomenal actually, he had a terrific game,” Fry said.
The Wanderers must now prepare for second-placed Bankstown FC next.
Meanwhile, the under 18s Wagga City Wanderers are sixth on the State League table after falling to a 2-0 loss against UNSW over the weekend.
Third-placed UNSW scored twice in the first half and held out the Wanderers in a tough game at Gissing Oval.
The under 20s Wanderers fared slightly better but couldn’t steal a draw in a 2-1 loss to the students.
