United opened the second half of the season with a bang, netting six unanswered goals past bottom-placed Junee at Burns Park last weekend, but coach Travis Weir is nervous ahead of their next challenge against South Wagga.
“South Wagga are a big unknown for me,” Weir said.
“No-one really knows how they’re going to play and that’s what I’m worried about.
“There’s a lot of danger involved in this game.”
Despite sitting ninth on the competition ladder, the Warriors pushed fifth-placed Young to the wire last weekend and held a 1-0 lead over minor premiership favourites Lake Albert the week prior.
South Wagga’s attacking flair sticks as a stumbling block for United’s slim September hopes and Weir knows the result could go either way.
“You could win or lose any game in this competition,” Weir said.
“Take us for example, we were gutted to see Leeton beat Tolland last weekend cause that really hurts our chances.
“You just can’t leave it up to other results so we really need to keep accruing points and winning games.”
United’s rising casualty list is another consideration as the men in orange plot an unlikely finals appearance.
Weir said goalkeeper Andrew McCracken is almost back to his regular starting capacity after suffering a calf strain against Cootamundra, however, midfielder Alec Hope and skipper Lincoln Weir are being managed for niggling injury concerns while last weekend’s hat-trick hero Jack Schein “isn’t 100 per cent”.
“We’re trying to give the boys a rest so we’ve pulled training back to once a week,” Weir said.
