Education Week is set to commence for all public schools across New South Wales, with celebrations taking place from July 31 to August 4.
From open classrooms to school displays, community exhibitions and public performances, the week aims to highlight the many achievements of public education, the diversity and inclusivity of programs running every day in public schools, and the many opportunities available to public school students and staff.
This year’s theme, “I Learn, We Learn”, celebrates schools’ commitment to system-wide improvement for every student, teacher, leader and school; developing a culture of high expectations for all; personalised student learning; the wellbeing of every student; and creating stronger ties with local communities.
The skills and talents of local students will be on display at Wagga Marketplace throughout the week.
Colourful display boards of student work will line the walkways and over 1400 students from 30 schools will take to the stage in front of Big W.
Each day there will be songs, dances, drama and musical items presented, while the annual chess challenge will take place throughout Thursday – all events part the 2017 Education Week festivities.
The opening ceremony takes place on Monday, July 31.
Riverina Central Choir provides pre-opening entertainment from 1.30pm. At 2pm the rousing sounds of the Yanco Agricultural High School drum corps will signal the start of the official opening.
Education Week chairman and ceremony compere Michael Woolbank will introduce Wiradjuri elder Aunty Gail Manderson for the Welcome to Country, while relieving director of public schools Wagga Wagga, Russell Graham, will deliver the opening address.
Wagga High School’s special education dance ensemble and vocalists Alice Egan and Lachlan Stephens, North Wagga Public’s dance ensemble and the Mount Austin High hip hop crew will perform.
The vocalists progressed to the final stages for this year’s Schools Spectacular – Alice for featured artist and Lachlan for the core choir.
Both dance ensembles presented standout performances at this year’s Riverina Dance Festival, winning over audiences, and the hip hop crew has been invited to perform as special guests in the finals of Bring It On dance at Sydney later in the year, marking a third consecutive year in the finals.
Everyone is invited to view the Marketplace performances and encouraged to attend open days at their local public schools, to see first-hand all the wonderful learning taking place.
