High-altitude adventurers winched to safety after a tricky night

The experienced hikers, aged 63 and 71 years, were winched to safety at 9.30am on March 3 after spending a night stuck in the Alpine National Park.

The men called emergency services on the evening of March 2 after they realised they had "misjudged" the terrain.

The search and rescue squad deemed the hikers had enough supplies and experience to "safely stay for the evening".

The two men were checked over by paramedics after their rescue and were deemed to not need treatment.

Mount Bogong, a favourite climbing destination for nature lovers, towers over the Alpine National Park at 1,986 metres high.

"The peak's undulating planes are home to dozens of specialised species, along with abundant opportunities for adventure and some of the most spectacular views in the state," Parks Victoria said.

Parks Victoria warned that the mountain's three walking paths, of varying difficulty, are steep, rocky and hazardous tracks.
