Fake rideshare driver charged after allegedly kidnapping passenger

A 36-year-old woman was leaving a Toowoomba bar at 11.15pm on March 2 when she hopped into the back of a car she believed to be a rideshare vehicle.

The 24-year-old male driver allegedly took the woman to a property in Newtown, a suburb in inner Toowoomba, and led her inside.

When the passenger realised the car wasn't headed to her drop-off point, she contacted a friend who called police.

Officers arrived at the Newtown property "a short time later" and the woman was freed. She was taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital for assessment.

The 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with deprivation of liberty.

He faced Toowoomba Magistrates Court on March 4 and was refused bail.

Police believe the alleged kidnapping may not have been the first. Detectives are urging anyone who has had a similar to contact police.
