Wagga City leaders set platform for big win

Captain-coach Josh Thompson led from the front at Harris Park, top scoring with 75 to help Cats to a strong position.

After losing opening partner Ben Turner (0) in the first over, Thompson put on a 104-run partnership with Jon Nicoll (42) as Wagga City were well on the front foot.

While the remainder of their batting line up failed to go on with the job, despite being bowled out for 213 with one ball remaining, Kooringal were never really on target in the chase.

Thompson was pleased with the 83-run victory.

"It was good to beat them guys as they put up a pretty good fight with the ball," Thompson said. "It was the best bowling we've faced as a unit for quite some time.

"I know it was meant to be the fifth round but it was our second game in and I think they bowled exceptionally well so it was good to notch up 200, something I thought was pretty defendable."

It was a real team effort with the ball with Luke Naumann, Zac Lewis, Max Harper and Thompson all picking up two wickets to bowl Colts out for 130 in the 37^th over.

Alex Smith (24), Daniel Perri (21), Hamish Starr (30) and Andrew Dutton (28) all got starts but they were the only Colts batsmen to reach double figures.

Thompson was happy with how the bowling attack controlled things.

"Hamish Starr and Dutto were the two blokes we wanted to get early so to get them fairly unscathed was a real bonus," he said.
