Tour de Riverina to get its finale at Uranquinty

The final leg was due to be held in mid September in Albury before the regional lockdown forced all community sport to go on hiatus.

That event has since been called off, and the fifth and last round will now be held at Uranquinty on Sunday, November 28.

Competitive opportunities for cyclists have been few and far between the past few months, and Tolland president Will Silver expects that to translate into a strong response for the race.

"We're happy to hold it. The top ten is probably not really decided and certainly the winner could come from anywhere in the field, so it should be a pretty exciting last round," he said.

"There's hasn't been anything (racing) for quite some time and now community sport is back and the vaccination rates are up, we can get back into it.

"It's a bit of a prelude to the new facility at Pomingalarna opening and getting that interest (in cycling) back.

"The next couple of months in Wagga is going to be pretty exciting with the new velodrome and crit (criterium) track opening up, and the other facilities around that."

As of late last month the $12 million multisport cycling centre was 80 per cent complete, and Silver expects facilities like the pump, jump and BMX tracks to attract the younger generation.

"I think it will lead into young boys and girls just deciding I'm going to have a crack at BMX racing," Silver said.

"Hopefully that can take off and Wagga can start building a club around BMX, because it's pretty attractive for the younger generation.

"From a club's perspective, how we'll be selling it is it's somewhere for the community to come out and watch something different."

The Tour de Riverina leaderboard is tight heading into the last round, with Tolland pair Andrew Piffero (24 points) and Dylan Addison (22) narrowly ahead of Griffith's Stephen Bertoldo, with Tolland's Peter Johnson (20) out of contention with a calf injury.
