When Jackie French posted on her Facebook page offering to do a Zoom reading with some schools and libraries, Sacred Heart's literary intervention teacher Cathy Haggar expected her response to be lost in the sea of emails and messages.
"I thought oh there's no hope but whatever I'll email her anyway ... and she said she could squeeze us in so we instantly arranged it all," Mrs Haggar said.
"I honestly don't know who was more surprised that we got her the teachers or the students."
Mrs French appeared in front of the Wagga students through a video call on Friday and read her famous picture book Pete the Sheep before fielding questions from the inquisitive students.
The children had been conducting an author study of Mrs French throughout the week and were keen to know where she gets her ideas from and her favourite books.
Mrs Haggar said the event went "really, really well" and the children were full of excitement throughout.
"When her name came up on the Zoom the kids faces just lit up and I think that's the closest some of them have been to a celebrity," Mrs Haggar said.
"She had them all really engaged and it was just a great way to end the term especially after four weeks of lockdown."

Among the excitable students was Matilda Tembleton, 9, who watched the reading alongside her year 3 class.
"It was good and it was really funny," Matilda said.
"The story is funny because Pete the Sheep keeps running and the person has to shave it to get the wool off."
Matilda was excited when she found out Mrs French would be speaking to them as she has read many of her books including Pete The Sheep and Diary of a Wombat.
"I think I will remember it for a long time," she said.
