But it's an adage which sits comfortably with Gold Coast Titan Jaimin Jolliffe, not only in regards to the team but his individual game.
The Kangaroos junior has now established himself as a regular in the Titans first choice squad after playing all 24 games this year.
After winning just ten games this season, the Titans required Canberra and Cronulla to lose to give themselves a chance at finals, which they duly snatched with a dominant 44-0 win over the Warriors on Sunday.
The Steven Bradbury memes have flowed thick and fast and some critics have questioned whether they deserve to be there.
But Jolliffe is confident they have the unpredictability to challenge the Roosters in Saturday's elimination final at Townsville, it's just a matter of their defence holding up.
"We know we're a good attacking team, it's more defensively was our focus. It's the first team we've kept to nil in several years," the 24-year-old said.
"If we focus on defence, we've got guys in the team who can really change a game. (Fullback) Jayden Campbell has played less than ten games but he's playing with that much confidence the way he's taking teams on, and David (Fifita) can beat a lot of defenders close to the line and do it himself.
"We lost a lot of really tight games against some top quality teams. We had Melbourne almost beaten, and the Roosters are that.
"We've been inconsistent, that's for sure. But the beauty of finals is it doesn't matter what you've done through the year, you just have to be the best team on the night.

"If we show up with the right attitude and we compete hard, we feel we can take on some of these top teams."
The Titans launched a big comeback against the Roosters in round 14, which fell just short in a 35-34 loss, but Jolliffe said it gives them belief they can match them.
"There's no second chances now so you take that motivation into every game. They only just beat us late last time, so we'll be looking to get them back for that," he said.
"You can take confidence out of knowing we nearly got them last time. I think they know we're going to be a threat, and we're going to come after them."
Jolliffe has played 40 NRL games the past two years, and the prop's strong from has been rewarded with a contract extension until the end of 2024.
He said he now feels right at home at the top level.
"I feel like I've got used to the standard now, I know what I have to do each week to keep my spot," he said.
"I'm used to the speed of the game, it's obviously got a lot quicker this year but I feel like I've adapted to it.
"I'm pretty comfortable in first grade and it's definitely challenging, but I don't feel like I'm behind the pace."
The Titans will embark on a first final campaign since 2016 against the finals hardened Roosters, but Jolliffe said that holds no concerns for the team.
"We've got our own share of players who have played finals football. We're very fortunate everyone is available this week and it's an exciting thing to be a part of.
