Mrs Nancarrow, a centenary of life

HAZEL Nancarrow is used to a bit of hard work and has spent most of her 100 years working on the land and performing domestic duties in the Riverina.Mrs Nancarrow celebrated her 100th birthday, which was yesterday, with a party on Sunday attended by 50 close family members and friends.She was born Hazel Rogers on May 16, 1911 at Rushworth in Victoria and moved around the Riverina to Osborne, Tallimba and Mildil where she worked on her family farm or as a housemaid for other families.She married Leslie Nancarrow on March 10, 1936 and they spent their first six years of married life on a property near Weethalle.She had no modern conveniences of today and would spend many hours of hard work helping her husband on the farm.They had two children, Jean and Judith, and moved twice in a three- year period.They spent 14 years on a property at Yerong Creek before they purchased a small farm at Forest Hill.Mr and Mrs Nancarrow moved into their new home in Ashmont in 1968 and spent 20 happy years there.Mr Nancarrow died in 1993 and Mrs Nancarrow decided to leave the family home for Riverina Gums retirement village. She was moved to the Loreto Home of Compassion in December, 2008 and has been a resident there ever since.She celebrated her milestone on Sunday with a cake, handmade by a friend, and family and friends who kept in touch over the years.
