AFL Riverina again proved itself to be the number one breeding ground for AFL footballers in NSW, dominating the 2021 'Origin' team.

The team is generated by the NSW Australian Football History Society, with a selection panel consisting of Richard Colless, Gerard Healy, Mike Sheahan, Wayne Carey, Mark Maclure and Rod Gillett.

Temora's Luke Breust, now a 239-game veteran at Hawthorn, was named vice captain of the team.

Others to feature include Harry Cunningham, Dougal Howard, Harry Perryman, Isaac Smith, Harry Himmelberg, Matt Flynn and Jacob Hopper.

Society patron Richard Colless was proud to unveil another strong NSW team.

"This year's team was selected from the fifty-one players from NSW-based clubs on AFL lists in 2021," Colless said.

"Tom Hawkins from Geelong is again captain of the team, and he wins the inaugural Mohr Medal for being the leading NSW goal kicker in the AFL with 54 goals."

The selectors did make at least one controversial call, deciding to leave Taylor Walker out of the team due to 'recent events'.

"It's important to acknowledge that notwithstanding, an outstanding on field season by Taylor Walker the selectors have concluded due to recent events it would be inappropriate to consider Taylor for selection in the team," the release read.

The society this year introduced the Mohr Medal, named after St Kilda goalkicking champion Wilbur (Bill) Mohr, who hailed from Wagga club Federals.

They also introduced the Stiff Medal, named after Jimmy Stiff, for the best emerging talent. This year it went to Sydney's Errol Gulden.
