With the current regional lockdown extended until at least September 10, what life will look like when more freedom is granted remains very uncertain.
However after the latest extensions, which will see the Riverina suffer at least a month-long lockdown, Barilaro admitted some 'high-risk situations' could still be prohibited in order for the community to open back up.
"My view is if we are lifting the restrictions in the regions, at this stage it is to go back to pre-lockdown conditions," Barilaro said.
"But if the way to open up the regions was to pull out some of the high-risk situations or sectors, and community sports could be one of them with crowds, but it meant the rest of your restrictions could be lifted, then I would actually... my sense at the moment is that community sport with crowds is probably on the chopping block for the season."
It only adds to the difficulties facing sporting administrators, clubs and participants as they look to find a way to complete their seasons in a region that has not had a COVID-19 case in over a year.
Group Nine and Football Wagga will consult clubs on pushing into October, Southern Inland will not play past September 26 while AFL Riverina will meet on Monday to reassess their stance.
The start for summer sports could also be impacted if Barilaro's fears hold true, but crowds are less of an issue.
