The two Wagga clubs met at Laurie Daley Oval on Saturday and it was the cellar dwellers who shot out to an early lead.
Brothers capitalised on a couple of mistakes as Kangaroos were looking to come out of their own end to jump out to a 10-0 lead after 14 minutes.
However with their season on the line, Kangaroos settled and were able to work into the contest.
After a sustained period they found some points to go into half-time at 10-all.
They then held their rivals scoreless in the second half on their way to a 28-10 victory.
Coach Simon Woolford was pleased with the response.
"It was disappointing we didn't start with a lot of energy considering what was on the line but Lachie Jolliffe came about 25 minutes into that half and really gave us some energy and they all jumped on the back of that," Woolford said.
"It was disappointing, but to hold them to zero from the 15th minute onward was pleasing and I thought there was a lot of good stuff both sides of the ball that we showed late in the first half and the whole of the second half, we scored some good tries and some things we've been practising came off.
"A win is a win and it's always a tough tussle between Kangaroos and Brothers."
Bad errors cost Kangaroos early as George Collins-Kelleher and then co-captain James Hay went over for Brothers.
It took plenty of time to find their rhythm, but after being camped on the Brothers try line Kangaroos finally found space as Noa Fotu scored with 12 minutes left in the half.
Minutes later a break from Jake Mascini levelled things up.
Fotu put Kangaroos in front two minutes into the stanza after a big break from Ned Cooper.
Cooper was then the beneficiary of another break as he doubled the Kangaroos lead with 22 minutes to play.
Kangaroos then took advantage of Warren Lloyd being sin-binned as Fotu completed his hat-trick.
Cooper then sealed the win with four minutes to play following a Bowie Foster break.
Points have been hard to come by for Kangaroos in the back end of the season, but Woolford thought there were plenty of positive signs.
"We started to play how we talked about late in the first half and I thought we showed some good patience at times," he said.
"We scored some nice tries in the second half on the back of some patience so all-in-all it was good to get a comfortable win."
