CYCLISTS 'WELL LOOKED AFTER'
Just when I thought the Wagga Rail Trail had been put to rest, I read the article "On the trail of opportunity" (The Weekend Advertiser, July 24).

I have written numerous letters over the past couple of years stating my strong opposition to the Wagga Rail Trail, due to reasons such as impact on farmland and owners (which Mrs Glastonbury failed to mention).
Mrs Glastonbury mentions that the rail trail will offer a safe place for cyclists and walkers. Surely that is the logic behind the Active Travel Plan.
Mrs Glastonbury, I really don't think 236 signatures suggests a lot of support for the rail trail.
I just can't believe given the money being spent by council on the Active Travel Plan, plus the project going ahead at Pomingalarna that they are asking for more money.
Yes last year, during COVID-19, there were a lot of families out on bikes, but I definitely haven't seen anywhere the numbers this year.
Cyclists in Wagga are a fairly small proportion of the population and I believe council has already spent a lot of money for their benefit. Surely Wagga City Council has a lot more projects where money is desperately needed to be spent.
Cyclists in Wagga have been very well looked after, but unfortunately there are always those groups that want more.
To support my objection, Wagga City Council has budgeted $15.8 million for the Active Travel Plan stages 1 and 2 and $9.2 million on Pomingalarna.
I would imagine that other sporting/cultural groups in Wagga would love that sort of money spent on their projects.

SURVEY TRANSPARENCY A MUST
Leanne Schulz writes in The Daily Advertiser regarding the upcoming council election that there is a candidate and councillor survey currently being circulated created by "random concerned community members" ("Use extra time before council elections to consider vote", July 27).
It would be most beneficial to all concerned community members to know the exact questions that are being asked.
I suggest that The Daily Advertiser editorial staff should ask for the list of questions, which could be published for all of the ratepayers and residents of the City of Wagga Wagga to see and consider.
Rather than leave it up to an unknown group of people to provide information about the responses they receive from the councillors and candidates being queried.

DOES POLICY REDUCE CRASHES?
Wes Fang has asked the right question. Do these cameras make things safer? ("Camera vehicles nabbing drivers", The Daily Advertiser, July 27).
There's no doubt that drivers are going slower and fines are falling. Is this the only measure the government is using to declare 'success'?
Given the significant funds extracted from local drivers we should expect to see not only fewer crashes but less severe ones.
Will this be demonstrated? Indications lately are to the contrary.
Also interesting and amusing is the little political opportunity seized by Chris Minns. The Labor Party is far from innocent in the speed camera game!
