According to Google, they describe the character of a good participant in a system of government.

And in my view, Greg Conkey has qualified for that definition with flying colours.

It is appreciated by many of us in the electorate, I'm sure, that our MP Joe McGirr intends to read the "euthanasia bill" before he votes on it ("Steadfast", July 9).

He reassures us that he will "look at it carefully ... [and] be examining the bill".

This is likely a much sounder approach than giving it just a slap-dash glance while waiting for the lights to turn, or ignoring its content completely.

I'm disconcerted, though, as to why he thinks it necessary to inform Wagga voters that he will do what anyone would expect by "examining" the bill before voting on it; perhaps he thinks we are rubes who wouldn't be aware of how reading is important in the lofty halls of power.

But, rather, it sounds very much like someone stacking sandbags for when he follows his personal beliefs and votes a resounding "Nay", as he has intended all along, ignoring the wishes of 82 per cent of Wagga voters who want the legislation passed and who (bizarrely it seems) expect a local member to represent the views of their constituency.

In response to Keith Wheeler's opinion piece "Minority benefits from electric revolution" on July 5, apart from his complete misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the opportunities electric vehicles bring in decreasing carbon emissions and helping address the climate crisis, he fails to consider the health benefits all of us would have from increased take-up of EVs especially vulnerable people such as children, the elderly, those with pre-exisiting health conditions and those living near busy roads and in busy urban centres.

As a severe asthmatic, poor air quality has always been a concern of mine, dictating whether or not I can leave the house and partake in everyday activities that won't set off a coughing fit.

Combustion vehicles are a major source of air pollution in Australia causing increased rates of premature death, hospitalisation and visits to the emergency department costing the healthcare system billions of dollars each year, not to mention the personal costs incurred with a chronic illness.

EVs reduce harmful emissions and air pollution; they are cleaner and safer alternatives to fuel and diesel.

Whether Mr Wheeler likes it or not they will be part of the solution to tackling climate change and improving air quality for all us to benefit.

Socialism at its finest.
