At the halfway point of the competition, coach Rob Cleland thought the 15-10 win over Tumut at Jarrah Oval was crucial if the Boiled Lollies want to keep progressing this season.
"We probably didn't play our best rugby to be fair but we got away with it in the end and that is the main thing," Cleland said.
"We looked at the table coming into the game and basically said if we don't win this one we are out of the competition so it was pretty much a must-win for this time of the season."
After Tumut levelled things with around eight minutes to play, a bust from April Sharp set up Simpson to score the winner on the last play of the game.
The result has Wagga City in the thick of the compact ladder. They have a game in hand against third placed Albury, and sit outside the top four on percentage.
Nursing a number of injuries, Cleland believes the general bye has come at a perfect time for the club.
Meanwhile Ag College made it three wins on the trot to move into fourth place with a 83-0 win over Hay at Beres Ellwood Oval.
Shannon Taylor scored five tries in the result.
The win saw the premiers move past Wagga City and CSU on the ladder after Reddies suffered a 36-5 loss to second placed Waratahs.
Albury's 29-0 win over Leeton completed the round.
