The Holden Commodore was found crashed through a fence on O'Briens Road, 23 kilometres northeast of Hillston, around 10am on Sunday by a passing motorist.

The driver, a 31-year-old, was found nearby, having crawled out of the vehicle at some point during a night of frigid temperatures.

Police believe the crash occurred near the intersection with Square Well Lane some time between 2am and 3am on Sunday.

The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital.

He sustained several broken bones and suffered internal bleeding, police said, and he remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

NSW Ambulance's MIA duty operations manager Markus Zarins, based in Griffith, said crews responded to reports of the rollover around 10.30am on Sunday.

"The gentleman was injured insofar as we think he had a fractured left femur and also (suspected) fractured pelvis," he said.

"He was transferred urgently to Hillston Hospital and a helicopter was (called in) from Orange and he was transported to Canberra Hospital."

Temperatures plummeted to zero at Hillston on Saturday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with a low of 2.5 degrees experienced on Sunday.

A crime scene was established at the crash site and Murrumbidgee Police District officers are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash.
