A COCKTAIL party in Wagga last year inspired former Australian cricketer Mark Taylor to throw his support behind the Riverina Cancer Care Centre (RCCC).At the end of the cocktail party, Mr Taylor decided the facility was a worthy cause, and as a patron of the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation, he decided the group should match the funds raised at the cocktail party. This contribution was recognised yesterday in the naming of a new courtyard at the RCCC, which will be known as the Sporting Chance Court.Although he has not lived in Wagga for about 30 years, Mr Taylor said it was still his “main home town” and he was proud to be involved with the RCCC. “In an area like Wagga, the community needs this,” he said. “We’re delighted to be involved – it’s a great facility.”He said it was important for Riverina residents to have access to cancer treatment and support close to home, instead of having to travel to Sydney or Canberra.A contribution of $100,000 from Brian and Joy Kahlefeldt to help make the RCCC a reality was also recognised yesterday, in the naming of Kahlefeldt Way.The pathway is paved with bricks bearing the names of people who have contributed to the centre.RCCC trust chairman Joe Schipp said Mr and Mrs Kahlefeldt had made an ongoing contribution to the facility, and surprised them with yesterday’s announcement. But Mr Kahlefeldt was modest about the honour, saying all the smaller donations were just as important as the bigger ones. “There have been very few occasions in my life when I’ve been short of words, and I can assure you this is one of them,” he said. “Joe Schipp’s the guy who should be getting all the credit for this.”
