United were able to get closer to Hanwood than any other team has this year, going down 3-2 in an entertaining affair at Rawlings Park.
A double to Chaise Donetto and a goal to Daniel Rogato had Hanwood 3-0 up at half-time and on their way to another comfortable victory.
But United had other plans and staged a spirited second half comeback.
Jed Sim and Jayden Beattie both scored second half goals as Wagga United finished full of momentum.
Wagga United co-coach Aaron Mo'ane was disappointed not to grab a point but heartened by the performance.
"We're building," Mo'ane said.
"I always thought we were going to be a better second half of the year team."

Hanwood coach Brian Bertolin also gave credit to Wagga United.
"It was a pretty good game actually Wagga United played really well," Bertolin told The Area News.
"They were a decent team, and it was good to have a tough match.
"We were really sharp in the first half and probably dropped off a bit in the second half. Wagga United kept coming at us."
Hanwood were without a handful of players, including Daniel Johnson and Joey Schirripa.
