The station opened its doors at 10am on Saturday, handing our colouring books and plastic fire helmets to children as well as a chance to hold a fire hose and sit in the cabin of a fire truck.
Adults who attended were given an explanation of how Wagga Fire and Rescue crews assisted with the mid north coast floods in March and were offered tips on how to prevent house fires.
Lucas Diaz, age 6 from Wagga, visited the open day with his parents and sister Sophie, aged 5, said he was interested in the fire station because he wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up.
"I want to be able to squirt water and help people," he said.
Turvey Park Station Commander Jeff Edwards said the main aim of the open day was to spread a "winter fire safety message" and "a big fun day for the kids".
"It's about the home fire escape plan so people understand the danger of carbon monoxide, which is the gas that is the remnants of a fire and the importance of smoke detectors.
"We're worried about heater safety and wheat bags [for heat therapy] if people leave them under pillows and under beds because they can ignite.
"We also want people to make sure that every time they use a clothes dryer to clean the lint filter out as every time you don't change it it gathers more and more lint and compresses and it will catch fire; we have attended many fires that have started from a dryer."
Mr Edwards said the day was also helpful for getting children comfortable being around firefighters as "there's nothing worse than if kids are scared and we have to go into a house to look for someone and the child hides".
