Punters almost brought down the Murrumbidgee Turf Club (MTC) grandstand when heavily-backed favourite Monterey Zar ($2.30) got the photo to win the final race of the carnival - the Gallagher Insurance Brokers Class One Showcase Handicap (1200m).
It took Monterey Zar a while to wind up, but he motored late to win a three-way photo finish, downing Brothers Of Antrim ($21) and Barramundi Lad ($12).
As much as there was delight in a Cup day double, it was almost relief for Colvin as punters jumped out of trees to back Monterey Zar.
"When you've got a bloody short-priced favourite, you just hope you get the money," Colvin said.
"He was a bit flat-footed there for a while, he was a bit flat but then he started to stride out alright because we haven't pushed him too hard.
"It's great to have a win."
Monterey Zar spent two and a half years out of action with injury and his Cup day triumph, with Nick Heywood in the saddle, was just his second run back.
"I'm so proud of him," Colvin said.
"He's had a lot of injuries. We always knew he had the ability, it's just great to see."
It was Colvin's second win of the day after Kurocaine ($10) took out the Walsh & Blair Country Magic Benchmark 66 Handicap (1200m) for jockey Jay Ford.
Kurocaine faced a battle to make the field to start with, being the fourth emergency, but flew home to down Sizzleonthebridge ($20) and Golwen ($41) in a busy finish.
Colvin was relieved he got a run firstly and then was happy with what the five-year-old produced.
"Getting a run was the biggest worry," he said.
"The owners come down from Melbourne. They come all the way and it wasn't until after 7.30 that I realised he got a run.
"He's been such a consistent horse that he deserved to win one like that. He's always been very consistent so it was great to see him win."
Colvin was rapt with his Gold Cup day double and planned to celebrate accordingly.
"Overall the carnival's been great," he said.
"It's very good. A good excuse to have a drink. I think (the celebrations) will be pretty wild. We'll end up down at the Union Club and we'll have a pretty good night."
