Riverina Superintendent Bob Noble said they would be keeping a watchful eye on patrons inside the venues as well as drivers on the road over the next few days.
"We would encourage people to exercise responsible behaviour, particularly around their consumption of alcohol but also their behaviour around public spaces and licensed premises," Superintendent Noble said.
"If you play up, there's every chance police are going to be there to detect you and we don't want to have to do that. We want everyone to have a good time and go home safe."
IN OTHER NEWS:
An extra two police car crews will be rostered on from 12pm today, and another three crews will be deployed on patrol later this afternoon for the Gold Cup.
Superintendent Noble said some of the costs of the extra patrols were covered by the Murrumbidgee Turf Club, which holds the Gold Cup.
"It has to be said the club themselves are being very proactive in enforcing good behaviour around the event, so they're to be congratulated for that," he said.
"Be that as it may, we will enforce the law and make sure people don't do the wrong thing."
Police will be doing spot checks throughout the day, however venues and COVID marshals will be largely responsible for making sure people are following the coronavirus guidelines.
