Forensic police spent hours at a Holmwood Cross unit in Albury on Monday following the incident on Sunday morning.
It's alleged Joseph Dawson, 23, shot the 24-year-old victim at the property before fleeing the scene.
Police and paramedics were called to the area about 5am on Sunday after being alerted to the incident.
The victim could be heard crying out in pain near the front of his home before being treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Injuries to his neck and face required him to be transported to Melbourne for surgery, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
The injuries are not life threatening.
Dawson, who was arrested at a home in Thurgoona about 10 hours after the shooting, is facing charges of attempted murder and weapons offences.
He appeared before Albury Local Court on Monday and did not speak during a brief mention of the matter.
He did not apply for release.
The court heard Dawson, who wore an Adidas T-shirt and had facial hair, will make a bail application on Friday.
Police continued to search for the sawn-off weapon allegedly used in the shooting
Specialist search and rescue officers searched the nearby TAFE roof, surrounding homes, drains and other areas.
The gun hasn't been recovered.
Acting Inspector Troy Martin said there wasn't any ongoing threat to members of the public.
"The two persons were known to each other," he said.
"The information we have is that they caught up earlier in the evening.
"Subsequently they've ended up back at that residence.
"And in relation to what took place at that time, that's a matter for the court to determine."
Albury detectives had planned to travel to Melbourne to speak to the victim and were yet to do so.
"He's very lucky, very lucky," Acting Inspector Troy Martin said.
"There's a number of things that could have happened potentially.
"It could have been life threatening.
"The victim's very lucky it hasn't taken his life."
