World War II pilot Harold Maurice Woodroffe disappeared after his Beaufighter crashed in Papua New Guinea during a battle in 1943.Harold Woodroffe’s nieces and nephews know his wife Norma wrote several letters to the Department of Defence, asking the whereabouts of Harold who was reported missing. More than 50 years later, the Woodroffes were finallycontacted by the RAAF in September last year. The RAAF said they would begin to search for the site of the plane wreck after receiving information on its whereabouts. RAAF members and a team of forensic dentists travelled to the wreck site in New Guinea, finding only debris. But no human remains were found. “We would like to let her know the RAAF did go searching for her husband,” said Harold’s niece, Louise Sanders. “The plane was still there, including the original colours and the plane numbers. “They didn’t find any remains, but they did find Harold’s ID disk in the wreckage.”Mrs Sanders said the family would like to make contact with Norma Woodroffe to let her know the RAAF finally did search for her husband.“We think it would be nice for her to have his ID disk,” she said. The family believes Norma would be in her late 80s and may have remarried. Anybody who knows Norma is asked to contact Kree Nash at The Daily Advertiser on 69383357.
