A 30th minute penalty from Megan Castle sent the Wanderers into half-time in touch with their Canberra opponents at 2-1 down.
But the floodgates opened after the break as Belconnen United piled on six second-half goals to register a convincing win.
Talia Backhouse and Keira Bobbin both scored doubles for the home team.
It was a tough start to the year for the Wanderers team, up against last year's grand finalists who are again expected to feature prominently in this year's competition.
The Wanderers' reserve grade women's team also experienced a rough start to the year, going down 7-0 to Belconnen United.
The shining light was a 2-0 win to the Wanderers' under 15 girls team.
The 17s and 13s experienced narrow defeats.
