Howard battled fellow men's track endurance squad rider Kelland O'Brien in a sprint to the finish line to complete the event in three hours and three minutes.

"We didn't have much left in the legs between the two of us," Howard said.

"It was a pretty hard last 30 kilometres that we were away together.

"We had a really good group that worked well together in the cross winds.

"When you have the wind coming from the side like that, experience is key.

"There were a couple of stages where the group got a bit too big for the road so we had to put the foot down and split up."

The Australian men's track squad claimed a clean sweep in the placings, with Sam Welsford crossing the line in third place.

The group used the prestigious race as part of their preparation for the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which is set to commence in July.

They're currently in the midst of a two-week training camp in Bright and will continue their regional roadshow over the coming weeks.

It marked the first time Howard had taken part in the Wagga to Albury race, which this year concluded on the outskirts of Jindera instead of the Lavington Hall.

"I've heard about it over the years but never had the chance to do it," he said.

"With everything going on in the world it's nice to get up here and do it."
