IT'S effectively the entree before the main course, but Wagga trainer Gary Colvin is optimistic he can begin a big week strongly at the Easter Monday meeting at Murrumbidgee Turf Club.

On Saturday Colvin will saddle up Another One in the $500,000 Country Championships Final at Randwick. One the same afternoon, daughter Gabby will be part of Melbourne's AFLW side looking to topple Adelaide and book a grand final spot after they beat Fremantle on Saturday.
In the meantime, two Colvin runners will return from long injury layoffs in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m) at Wagga on Monday.
Monterey Zar, who hasn't raced since his maiden victory in December, 2018 after picking up a tendon injury in trackwork, will return, as will Tully Toff for the first time since November, 2020.
"He (Monterey Zar) trialled well (fourth of seven runners on March 9). We've looked after him and it's been a long haul to get him back to the races," Colvin said.
"We're just hoping he gets through the race OK and he performs well, but he didn't draw well (barrier 14).
"We've given him plenty of time, a lot of swimming work and the treadmill to get him right. He looked a very promising horse (before the injury) and he's shown he's still got it a little bit, but he's been away a long time and I just want him to get through it."

Tully Toff notched all three of his victories from 26 career starts in a preparation in late 2018, but Colvin feels he can return strongly despite not having a trial.
"He's a very good horse who's just had a few problems. He's had a long spell and I expect him to do well and be very competitive," he said.
Colvin also expects Sizzling Cat to be in the mix in the last race of the day, the Class 2 Handicap (1200m), after luck didn't go the three-year-old's way when fourth in at Albury on March 18.
"He's drawn bad (14), which is disappointing, so we'll have to be a bit more positive on him," Colvin said.
"They just crawled last start and it was very hard to run home."
Colvin said his attention will be divided as his daughter looks to make the AFLW grand final, and he chases his Country Championships dream.
"We'll be half watching the racing and the football," he said.
"Another One trialled well the other day and everything's on track. We'll go up (to Sydney) early Wednesday, stay there a few days and let him settle in.
"She had a pretty good game Gabby (against Fremantle), so I'm glad we went down and watched her (in Melbourne).
"(Wife) Karen goes down a fair bit, but I'll definitely be down there for the grand final for sure if they happen to make it."
