Wagga's major COVID vaccine hub is struggling to find enough patients to jab, despite state and federal MPs clashing over the delay of 89,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to NSW.

The city's major vaccine hub says unlike other areas, they are struggling to get through their allocated doses with their waiting room sitting empty.
This week NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard claimed delayed deliveries and short notice ahead of vaccine arrivals to vaccine sites saw the state fall behind schedule on the planned rollout, but in Wagga hundreds of doses are still unclaimed.
Glenrock Country Practice GP Dr Ayman Shenouda runs the Wagga Wagga Respiratory Clinic alongside his general practice, and he is desperate to get more eligible patients booking in.
"I'm looking at the waiting room and it's empty," he said. "We have received the vaccine as scheduled and we are geared in to immunise 1200 people a week, but we are only running at 65 per cent capacity."
In other news:
The vaccination hub was chosen to become the site of one of 150 Commonwealth-funded respiratory clinics at the start of the pandemic, specifically geared to provide testing and now vaccination to the public.
The clinic receives more than 10 times the amount of vaccine doses as do general practices, with 1200 doses per week compared with just 100 weekly doses provided to most GPs, though it seems many patients haven't gotten the memo.
Meanwhile, at least two of the four GPs eligible to administer vaccines in Wagga report they are operating their vaccine program at 100 per cent capacity.
Glenrock Country Practice is completely booked out for vaccines while the Blamey Street Surgery is hitting full capacity each week, with practice manager Julie saying between flu shots and coronavirus vaccines they are busier than ever, but still happily taking on vaccine patients.
Dr Shenouda says people waiting for an appointment at their GP should make a booking at the respiratory clinic so that normal practices aren't inhibited by the rollout, and that the community is vaccinated as promptly as possible.
"I think people are not aware of the fact we're here and that capacity in general practice is [so much] lower," he said. "I understand people want to be vaccinated in their own practice... [but] we don't want general practices to be delayed in their main function, that's the reason it was structured."
The Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network's acting CEO Julie Redway said she is 'unaware of any vaccine wastage in our region' and pointed out 'the COVID-19 vaccine rollout is logistically challenging and complex'.
"Residents across our region are encouraged to be patient as vaccination clinics open in general practice," she said in a statement. "Should you be unable to get into your usual GP, COVID-19 vaccinations are also available at the five vaccination hubs in our region, including Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Young, Gundagai and Deniliquin."
