NSW Rural Fire Service crews are set to begin about 10am on Saturday, burning the reserve between Red Hill Road and Holbrook Road.
Riverina Zone operational officer Bradley Stewart said the hazard reduction burn, expected to wrap up about 3pm, was an essential part of protecting the city.
"Hazard reduction is a vital element in helping to reduce the intensity of bushfires," he said.
"This controlled burn will help protect numerous residential properties in the Tatton and Bourkelands area and also assist firefighters to control any future bushfires."
Mr Stewart said the success of hazard reduction burns depend largely on the weather, with favourable conditions throughout this week creating a window of opportunity for firefighters to undertake the burn.
"We are hoping to use the rain forecast for Saturday afternoon to assist with the burn by lessening the smoke impact on nearby residential properties," he said.
Residents are advised take the appropriate precautions across the day, which include keeping doors and windows closed, taking any washing inside and ensuring that pets are kept in a protected area.
"The Willans Hill Reserve will remain open but users of the reserve are asked to avoid the area and follow the directions of firefighters," Mr Stewart said.
