Karen McPherson was off duty and enjoying the day with her family at Saturday's Lockhart Truck Show when horses pulling a cart "bolted", leaving four people injured.
"I heard people at the event saying what was happening so I thought I better go and have a look, and when I saw the scene, no one else around had any first aid experience so as a nurse, I did what I had to do," she said.
The nurse of 40 years tried to keep the patients "as calm as possible" while they waited for paramedics to arrive.
"I reassured them it was going to be okay and tried to stop them from moving in case they did have any severe injuries that might be exacerbated," Mrs McPherson said.
Not a common emergency to see, Mrs McPherson said it was a learning curve for herself.
"As a nurse, I worked in a controlled hospital environment, and now I've been working in aged care for three years so to deal with that type of incident was definitely out of the ordinary," she said.
"It's all a part of being in this field of work I suppose, you adjust to whatever environment you have to."
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I spent most of my time with the two patients in their teens, and as we put them onto the ambulance trolley they thanked me, so I'm glad I could help in some way," she said.
Wagga Ambulance Station Inspector Eamonn Purcell said another off-duty paramedic also rendered support at the scene.
"They were invaluable. We can't thank them enough," he said.
