A woman has come to the rescue after a six-year-old boy was stopped by a man in a black ute in Wagga's suburbs at the weekend.

Police were informed of the child approach on Monday, when it was reported the little boy was waved down by a stranger on Sunday afternoon.
He was in the front yard of a Montgomery Street, Ashmont home around 2.40pm when a man driving a black ute waved to the boy before driving closer and stopping to talk to him, police said.

A woman known to the child noticed and yelled at the man, who then drove away.
An investigation commenced after police were notified and officers are seeking help from the public in finding a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.
He is described as being aged in his late 20s and was wearing a hat. Anyone who may have noticed a black Mazda BT50 in the area at the time is urged to come forward.
