Officers were alerted to the incident along the Snowy Mountains Highway at Talbingo about 3.30pm on Tuesday after a passerby witnessed the assault.
Riverina Police District Detective Inspector Adrian Telfer said the offender is believed to have forced the woman into a car and driven her to a remote location in the area where the domestic violence incident occurred.
"We understand this elderly female was thrown down the embankment quite viciously, resulting in a number of serious injuries of which she is still recovering from in hospital," he said.
Police officers, the State Emergency Service and paramedics attended the scene, with the woman retrieved safely and taken to Wagga Base Hospital with bruising to her face and deep cuts on her arms and legs.
Detective Inspector Telfer said police are now appealing for anyone in the area who may have seen a man described as being of Caucasian appearance in his 50s, of medium build with grey hair, blue eyes, about 170 centimetres tall and barefoot at the time of the incident.
"If you saw someone matching that description, someone who may have waved you down or who you may have collected, please come forward," he said.
"We are worried about the man, and would like to speak with him."
The woman and man were known to one another, according to Detective Inspector Telfer, who said it was believed they had an argument prior to the incident.
"Police have since recovered the vehicle this woman was driven in, so we know he has left on foot or been picked up by someone and we are making every effort to find him," he said.
Investigations are continuing, with potential witnesses urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
