Just before 7am on Saturday, highway patrol units were called to the suspected burst on Lake Albert Road near the turn-off to Railway Street.
Some traffic had to be diverted as crews worked to control the outpouring onto the main road.
Owing to the early hour, few cars were on the road which aided in the clean-up and helped in the traffic control.
One lane of traffic alone Lake Albert Road remains closed and the turn-off to some side streets have been affected.
By 8am, police had left the scene, leaving council workers to mop up the remains of the outburst.
It is unclear what caused the water main to burst, but council will begin an investigation.
