The master plan for the Talbingo mountain bike trail development is currently on public exhibition as the council seeks feedback.

The proposed mountain bike trail network will be positioned along Old Mountain, Big Talbingo Mountain, with connections to Yarrongobilly.

At the core of the network will be a 15-kilometre descending trail that connects the top of Old Talbingo Mountain to the town.

This trail drops 1000 metres in elevation along its length, making it the longest continuous descent in Australia, and the only track in Australia that incorporates 1,000 metres of vertical descent.

CEO of Snowy Valleys Council Matthew Hyde said the region had been hit hard by the devastating bushfires last summer.

Estimates of the impact of COVID-19 on the Snowy Valleys economy to October 31 has resulted in a decline of 200 employees, and gross rating point was estimated to decline by approximately $21.6 million.

"Talbingo is a small village and is probably one of the only ones that when you look around 360 degrees, it's surrounded by bushfire-impacted zones," Mr Hyde said.

"One of the main things the town relied on was Selwyn Ski Resort which won't be fully operational until 2022.

"So an independent group of people were able to obtain the funding for us to complete this masterplan, and they want something that is out of the box to help expand the revenue streams."

The proposed network has been divided into two precincts.

The Talbingo section with 51 kilometres of trail has been designed as the hub of the regional trail network, while the Yarrangobilly Precinct has 30 kilometres of track.

"We will also be using modern development so using e-bikes, installing charging stations and relaxing stations," Mr Hyde said.

"No one else is doing that yet.

"We are also looking at applying for funding to do a regional master plan to do something that would extend across the whole region."

Mr Hyde said the next stage is to access the funding to construct the project.

"We have some of the base information, and we are lodging applications for the bushfire recovery funding," he said.

"With some of these funding opportunities, you can't let them pass."
