While the event will not be going ahead in 2021, one of the organisers and founding members said in just two years Rainbow on the Plains had already brought about so much positive change.

"When we pulled the plug on the 2020 event, we decided we wouldn't go ahead for the following year," Kerry Aldred said.

"We knew that we wanted to wait until a vaccine was available."

Ms Aldred said everyone understood their decision and the majority of the sponsors have rolled their funding over to the 2022 event.

"Our major sponsor De Bortoli wines, were so understanding and we are so grateful to them," she said.

"All of our artists have already booked us in for 2022.

"We saw the writing on the wall fairly early and looking at how things going were at the end of last year, and it went down the drain this year with COVID, we are so glad we had already made the decision."

Ms Aldred said while it was disappointing the festival could not go ahead for another year, she took comfort in how much joy the event brought in just two years.

"It has been so rewarding and humbling," she said.

"To see people more comfortable with themselves and engaging with the community and feeling comfortable to walk down the street holding hands with their partner - I just get emotional thinking about it.

"And, it all started by going to the club and chatting to them to see if we could have a gathering and then in turned into a three-day event."
