Riverina Police District Superintendent Bob Noble said in the past week, officers have attended about six fights.
"We have had what has been a pretty frustrating and pretty strange year," he said.
"No doubt there will be people who want to let their hair down, but we just encourage everyone doing so - have fun - but be mindful of your safety.
"We have seen some concerning incidents across the city of Wagga and the broader Riverina the last week ... we have seen a concerning number of quite large brawls."
Superintendent Noble said alcohol had been a factor in every single one, including the latest incident on Wednesday night.
He added that frustrations after a grueling year fueled by social and economic difficulties have no doubt played a role in the number of incidents.
"Outside a licensed premise there was a brawl of up to 40 people [on Wednesday night]," Superintendent Noble said.
"There has not been any serious injuries but that has more been a matter of luck than management.
"We have seen a number of instances, including this week, where there was a person with a broken jaw and that is very concerning because those things can very easily become a fatality."
Superintendent Noble said police continue to investigate the incidents and except to make some arrests in the coming week.
