Riverina Police District have urged residents to contact their local police station if they will not have someone looking after their house while on holidays.
The holiday register will require residents to provide police with contact details, the dates they will be away and an alternate contact should the police need to visit the residence during their absence.
Wagga's Neighbourhood Watch president Wayne Deaner said residents could find that opportunistic crime is more likely during the Christmas period with people planning longer trips away.

However, Mr Deaner said those travelling in the coming weeks could reduce the risk of break-ins by giving off the illusion that someone is still home.
"If it looks like someone is not there, it is more likely the home will be broken into, and it won't matter what time or day," he said.
His first suggestion is to let someone trustworthy know the home will be empty for some time, be that a neighbour, family or friend.
"Let a neighbour know you are going to be away for an extended period of time. They could put your bins out or mow the lawn. They could also use your driveway, so people can see cars coming and going from your house," he said.
"There are very good products for turning lights on and off at certain times of the day. New televisions these days can also be set to turn on at set times.
"Some people also call security companies to come by their house once a week or every couple of days. It is a small cost, but you can't put a price on peace of mind."
