Emergency services were called Oura Road at Wantabadgery, east of Wagga, about 10.30pm on Friday following reports of a crash involving a Toyota Landcruiser 4WD.
The 55-year-old driver was ejected from the vehicle after it left the road and hit a tree, causing the man to die at the scene.
Riverina Police District Commander Superintendent Bob Noble said a brief will be prepared for the coroner, but early investigations indicated alcohol may have been factor.
"Police are investigation the potential of alcohol consumption earlier on that night of the crash," he said.
"We have some information to suggest the man had been drinking at a private residence.
"Obviously we don't want to preempt the findings of the coroner, though."
Superintendent Noble said the incident was "particularly awful".
"The deceased lived nearby, and his wife and two teenage sons attended the crash shortly after where they saw the gruesome scene," he said.
Anyone with information that may help police should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
