La Sante ($1.95) enjoyed his first win for the Donna Scott stable when taking out the Trackpix Racing Photography C,G&E Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m) at Wagga on Saturday.
Formerly trained by Trevor Sutherland, La Sante made up for a luckless first-up run and justified strong support from punters' with an impressive victory.
Scott will now try and plot a path to the Championships heat at Wagga on February 20.
"That's still on the radar with him," Scott said.
"We just had to get that win with him today. I think we're going to have to have a high-rated horse this year for the Championship, it looks like. He was 57 before today so that will get him somewhere near it now."
Scott is keen to give La Sante a short spell.
"We've got to be a bit careful. Maybe give him a little break now and go second up or third up into the Championships," she said.
Scott was happy to atone for a luckless first-up run with the four-year-old.
"He should have won the other day but he's a bit of a quirky horse and I told Danielle to ride him back and who would have thought at Albury, you wouldn't get a break," she said.
"It's good to get a win with him and we'll reassess now."
La Sante's win was one of three for Blaike McDougall on the day.
The Scott stable could have a three-pronged attack for the Country Championships with Oamanikka and Bautista also being considered for a tilt.
